How to race a Mazda Miata in the San Antonio Autocross Club
Attending the San Antonio Sports Car Association's monthly race in March 2024 with my son Josh, courtesy of our friend Frederico Del Toro, shed light on the widespread popularity of autocross and the presence of a robust community in San Antonio. The event showcased various race cars, from exotic Porsches to iconic American muscle cars like the Mustang. Witnessing Frederico's adeptness in car racing, a skill that complemented his proficiency in automobile repairs, was a revelation.
I've marked my calendar for June 22, and I'm eagerly looking forward to joining the race. Whether you're there to spectate or participate, it's sure to be an incredible experience. Watching, riding along, and now getting behind the wheel myself – I can't wait for my turn.
While strolling the track alongside Frederico last Saturday, I quickly grasped the similarities between autocross racing and snow skiing. It's all about strategically shifting the car's weight and anticipating precisely when to initiate a turn.
We were so impressed by the racing experience that we couldn't resist Frederico's offer to sell us his Mazda Miata racer to be my son Timothy’s first car. Since then, Timothy has done some minor repairs and even undertook the major repair of replacing the Miata's clutch. Everything seemed fine until I saw the transmission lying on the ground. Thankfully, Timothy figured it out and was able to put everything back together, and the car is running better than before.
It's incredible to come and watch and maybe even try your hand at racing. I've already invited my dad, as well as my friends Carl Bristol and Alejandro Esparza. These guys love cars, and we're learning a lot together. There's something to be said about men and cars, speed, and power.
If autocross racing and San Antonio sports cars sound like something for you, then join us on June 22 from 9 am to 12 noon. The racers get there early at 7 am to walk the track and sign in. The races are held monthly in the River City Community Church parking lot on 16765 Lookout Road, San Antonio, TX 78154. This is the location of the previous Verizon Amphitheatre and is very close to the Retama Park horse racing venue. For more information, go to the San Antonio Sports Car Association website (www.sasca.org).
Hope to see you there!
